What Freight Seal Numbers Establish

A small numbered seal on a trailer door can carry a lot of weight in a freight dispute. Knowing what seal records establish and where they fall short helps shippers and receivers read them correctly.

Why Hazardous Materials Storage Is Different

Hazardous materials bring risks that ordinary freight does not, and several agencies set rules for how they move and where they sit. Understanding the core concepts and official references helps shippers ask better questions of qualified professionals.

Warehouse Handling of Oversized Freight

Freight that is too long, wide, tall or heavy for standard racks and dock doors needs extra planning. Knowing how warehouses assess size, equipment and space helps shippers avoid refused deliveries and surprises at the dock.

What the Port of West Sacramento Handles

The Port of West Sacramento is an inland deep water port linked to the bay by a ship channel. Its official description, main cargos, operating model and the limits of published data help planners understand what it does and does not handle.

What Lot Tracking Does

Lot tracking links each unit in a warehouse to the production batch it came from. Every receipt, move and shipment carries the lot number, so the owner can tell exactly where each batch went. When a recall or quality problem hits, that record shows which goods to pull.

Without it, an owner may have to pull everything.

Recording Lots at Receiving

Lot tracking starts at the dock. Staff record the lot number for each carton or pallet, often by scanning a label. Expiration dates often get captured at the same time.

Then the warehouse system keeps lots separate. Two pallets of the same item but different lots get distinct records.

Lots Through Storage and Picking

  • Each location holds known lots
  • Picks record which lot shipped
  • Rotation rules such as FEFO use lot dates
  • Adjustments note the lot affected

If a picker grabs a different lot than the system directed, the record breaks. So scanning at the pick confirms the lot as well as the item.

Lot Tracking and Recalls

In a recall, the owner names the affected lots. The warehouse then finds every unit still in stock, places it on hold and reports which lots shipped to which customers.

Speed matters. Good lot records let a warehouse answer within hours instead of days.

Federal Traceability Rules for Food

The FDA’s Food Traceability Rule requires added records for foods on its Food Traceability List. It defines critical tracking events and key data elements, including lot codes. The FDA Food Traceability Rule page lists a compliance date of July 20, 2028.

For specific obligations, consult the FDA or a qualified food safety professional. The rule depends on the food and each party’s role.

Lot Tracking Beyond Food

Medicines, chemicals, cosmetics and electronics also use lot tracking. Customers and regulators in those fields often expect it, even when no single rule applies.

The article on FIFO versus FEFO explains how lot dates drive rotation.

Common Gaps

Lots get mixed during repacking. Labels lack lot numbers. Returns go back to stock without a lot scan. Each gap weakens a recall.

For example, a hypothetical sauce maker might find during a mock recall that a repacked pallet mixed two lots. Fixing the repacking process would close that gap before a real recall. The guide on carton repacking covers what to check.

Mock Recalls

A mock recall tests the system before a real one. The owner names a lot, and the warehouse finds every unit and every shipment. Timing the exercise and noting each gap shows how well lot tracking would hold up under pressure.
